Getting busted with some help from my friends By Lalaka Gunasekera

If you're going to do something sneaky, it's important that you're thorough so you don't get caught in the lie.

I was 14 and I was dreading having to give my Dad my end of year report card. You see, he really wanted me to be the best-in-class and I'd had some struggles that year. In actual fact, I'd spent too much time enjoying myself with my mates.

The only credible solution I had was, with some help from my friends, to fudge the figures to ensure my Dad didn't become upset with me. So, we carefully changed the marks and then I passed the report card onto him.

Gripped with paranoia, I went to my room and started blasting my new Michael Jackson record (Thriller). I thought all was okay until I heard my Dad bellow out my name from his study. Gulp.

When my Dad tracked me down in the house, he told me, "IF YOU'RE GOING TO CHANGE THE MARKS ON YOUR REPORT CARD, YOU COULD HAVE AT LEAST UPDATED THE TOTAL MARK AS WELL!".

My punishment was harsh as it was my birthday the next day and he cancelled my party. Lesson learnt.
